Volcanologists at the Alaska Volcano Observatory have issued a WATCH alert for Mount Great Sitkin in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska. The advisory carries an ORANGE color code, indicating elevated activity levels that require continued monitoring.
Observational conditions over the past day have been challenging; strong winds and persistent cloud cover have obscured seismic signals from ground sensors while simultaneously blocking satellite imagery and webcam views of the summit area.
The current eruptive phase began in July 2021. Since its initiation, lava flows have occupied most of the summit crater and extended into valleys below the peak.
Due to the lack of direct visual confirmation from cameras or satellites over recent hours, specific details regarding the immediate progression of activity remain limited.
